college lit final reflection

This class was very hard for me to get through. I had trouble getting through some of the books, but there were others that I really liked. I enjoyed reading Jane Eyre. She is someone that I can look up to because she represents a strong independent woman. I also really liked the Book Thief. It was a long book, but I read through it very quickly.

One thing that was hard for me in this class was the close reading. I am not used to that so when I read I don't look for clues or motifs. That was probably the most challenging thing about this class. Overall I did learn a lot from this class and it is important to read closely especially for next year when I am in college.

Ofelia

I was gone when we started this movie, but I saw the last half and it was a very interesting story. I felt really bad for Ofelia. She was just a young girl and she was being forced to grow up fast. She loves fairy tales and make believe, but her mother needed her to grow up and see the world as it really is which was cruel. The only person Ofelia had was her mother and she died giving birth to her little brother. I did not really understand the ending. I was shocked that guy killed her. Where was she when she was talking to those people in the end? was it heaven? I am not sure, but this movie was very interesting.

persepolis

Persepolis was a very interesting book. I was nervous at first because I had no idea how reading a comic book would go. It turns out that I really liked it. It was nice to see some of the drawings that Satrapi made. I think that this was a good way to learn a new type of literature and more schools should incorporate them into their literature.

As for the book the story line was very different. There were some parts that were really sad. One frame that stuck out to me a lot was after she found out her uncle Anoosh was executed. She was so angry and when God came to comfort her she pushed him away. I thought it was very sad.

There were good things in this book and bad, but overall I think we should incorporate more comic books into literature.

Jane Eyre

After finishing Jane Eyre I have a lot to say about her and Mr. Rochester. First that was the biggest twist ever! I was completely shocked to find out that Mr. Rochester already had wife. He had a previous marriage to a woman named Bertha and she crazy and locked up in the attick! Thats just weird!

If I was Jane I would be absolutely devistated! I would feel betrayed that he did not tell me. There is so many ways to look at this situation. She could leave him, but she loves him. If she left I feel like she would just be miserable because she is missing her sole mate. The other way is she could stay and she could learn to deal with the situation.

If it were me I would stay. I know I would be miserable without the one I love and it is not like he is still seeing her on a regular basis. He aslo said they would be leaving Thornfeild Hall so they could start a new life together. I think it would be in her best interest to stay with him, but that is just my opinion.

Holden's Snowball

1. "I went over to my window and opened it and packed a snowball with my bare hands. A little while later, I still had it with me when I Brossard and Ackley got on the bus. The bus driver opened the doors and made me throw it out. I told him I wasn't going to chuck it at anybody, but he wouldn't believe me. People never believe you."

2. I chose this scene to blog about because I thought it was very strange. I don't understand why you would want to carry around a snowball. He said it looked too nice to throw at anything, but even if that was true why would you want to carry around a snowball for no reason in your bare hands. Where he says that the driver didn't believe him I probably wouldn't have either. You don't usually see people carrying around snowballs just for the fun of it.

3. To be completely honest I have no idea why Salinger made this a big point. Maybe it was just a filler or something. It was just weird. I don't know why he mentioned this.

Grace Poole

I am very confused by Grace Poole. Her character is very suspicious. Is she dangerous? Jane thinks she is the one who started the fire in Mr. Rochester's room. She heard her loud laugh right before the incident happened. That was fishy to me. She also might have bit Mr. Mason. That was very weird! Who goes around biting and attacking people?

Earlier in the reading it says that Jane over heard two servants talking about Grace. They were saying how she gets paid a lot more than everyone else and she could leave if she wanted to. I thought that was weird. Why is she getting paid so much? I was thinking maybe earlier her and Mr. Rochester were together at one point. I feel like maybe that is why she is still there.
Maybe if she is dangerous and violent it is because she is angry at Mr. Rochester. Maybe she is angry that he broke it off. I honestly don't know I want to know more about her character!

connections

I just started reading Jane Eyre. It was kind of a slow start, but I am going to give it a chance. There is so much more to go so hopefully something actually happens in this book.

I was just thinking about Catcher in the Rye and already I have seen some similarities between the two books. Both books have some sort of death involved. In Catcher in the Rye Holden's little brother Allie died and in Jane Eyre both of her parents died. Also they both get sent to a type of boarding school.

The schools are totally different. Holden's school was a rich prep school. Very wealthy people went to that school. In Jane Eyre she is sent to a charity school for orphans. Everyone there is really plain. Since I am not that far into Jane Eyre I havn't made anymore connections yet, but those were just a few I noticed. They might not symbolise anything, but I thought maybe something could come of it.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Catcher in the Rye

The first couple nights that we started reading this book were not bad for me. I thought this book was going to be pretty interesting and eventful because people have murdered over this book. That really interested me. As we continued to read I was still interested, but started to get a feel for Holdens character and thats when he started to annoy me. He repeated so much! Also half way through or more still nothing was happening that made me understand why this book would cause someone to murder anyone. I probably did not read as close as those people did, and maybe they had issues but I just don't get it! I also could not stand that he was depressed all the time. Everyone was a bastard or a phonie besides a select few people. According to him his life was just miserable, but he made it that way. He is the one who got kicked out of 4 schools and is going no where with his life. This book just was not a favorite of mine and I am glad to be moving on to a new one!

childhood memory

When I was little my sisters and I wanted a dog extremely bad! My parents didn't think we would take care of it ourselves so they refused. Finally one day my parents saw an add in the paper and figured we could give it a shot. We left that day with a rat terrier puppy and I remember being so happy to finally have a dog! We had him for about a year when we took a trip up north to my uncle's house. He lived on a farm and had dogs of his own so he was more than happy to let us brig our dog Otto. The weekend was going great until the day we left. That morning all of the adults went to church. The kids stayed back and hung out at the house when we heard a loud yelp! We were all confused and when we went outside we saw my dog Otto laying in a ditch and a car speeding by. He got hit by the car and it didn't even stop to say anything to us. Otto's whole body was crushed! Sadly he was still alive. That was one of sadest moments in my life! It was a tough experience to go through. I will never forget him.
